Think things through

If you’re doing up a house, you might think that all you have to worry about is picking out a colour scheme and getting the property back on the market. Actually, there are lot of boring, practical things that you have to think about – from checking out skip hire London planning rules to supervising your builders and contractors.
Keeping the build site clean and safe is essential, not just when it comes to health and safety for you and your workers, but also when it comes to keeping the neighbours onside! Even if you’re only planning on selling the property on when you’ve finished the building project, the last thing you want is unhappy neighbours creating a bad atmosphere every time prospective buyers or tenants come round to view the house! Imagine that you’re in their position and have a neighbouring building site spilling out into the street; it doesn’t take much to ensure that your builders clean up after themselves and behave responsibly and to keep the surrounding area as pleasant as it was when you moved in.
Planning permission is one of the most stressful things that anyone doing up or converting a property will have to go through. The local council will make you jump through hoops just to get permission to put a pond in your own garden, let alone to build that extension that you want. The important thing is to be prepared; find out what kinds of planning permissions have already been allowed or rejected in the neighbouring streets. Forewarned is forearmed, as my Grandma always told me!
